Research abstract

The U.S. Army SBIR topic discusses the need for tactical microgrid (TMG) in support of the modern warfighter to provide reliable and flexible power solutions in challenging environments.  Specifically, the tactical microgrid standard (TMS) addresses this challenge by providing a communications, control, and interface framework that allows seamless integration of diverse power devices (sources, energy storage, distribution, loads). However, currently, no legacy power device is TMS compliant. The effort addresses TMS compliance for legacy power devices by proposing a tactical microgrid interface device (TMID) that supports connection of such devices to a TMS-enabled TMG.  The TMID will monitor and measure performance, potentially communicate with and/or control a power device, and relay information to a mircogrid controller via a TMS compliant Ethernet connection.  The proposed TMID is based on an Ethernet-capable microprocessor unit in combination with a modular electronics architecture developed for the control and operation of high-performance power conversion devices.
