Research abstract

The modern tactical microgrid (TMG) contains various components essential to the warfighterĺs mission in providing power to forward operating bases. áThe most basic component for providing power to a microgrid is a power source, which includes items like electric generators and batteries. áThe "Tactical Microgrid Communications and Control" (MIL-STD-3071), also known as ôTMS,ö documents how each of the components of a TMG integrate with one another, and this standard lays out a method of communication between these components to increase situational awareness and optimize grid resiliency. áBecause TMS is relatively new, most microgrid components are not equipped with the necessary communications to be compliant. It is therefore necessary to retrofit these components with a device to act as a bridge between the non-compliant microgrid components, like power sources, and the TMG data network. áSuch a device would need to have a few basic elements, including power metering, remotely controllable circuit breakers, and an embedded controller to receive commands and report device status over a TMS-compliant communications protocol. áHyperion Technology Group has gained knowledge of the TMS protocol on its 60-kW inverter system, the Tactical Energy Converter (TEC). áThis knowledge, combined with strategic partnerships in the field of power electronics, will allow Hyperion to perform a study whose result will define what hardware and software would be required to make existing microgrid power sources compliant with the TMS.
