Research abstract

50697-98-I Optimized Wind-Generator and Pump-Motor Controller--Foster-Miller, Inc., 350 Second Avenue, Waltham, MA 02154-1104; (781) 684-4239 Dr. David Cope, Principal Investigator Mr. Adi R. Guzdar, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG02-98ER82584 Amount: $74,984 Efficient conversion of highly variable wind power to mechanical power in the form of pumping water can be accomplished at remote sites through the innovative use of advanced electronic control systems. However, existing control systems require a battery back-up which loses its charge over time, and variable speed wind conditions degrade the efficiency of energy conversion. The elimination of batteries required for control power would dramatically increase system reliability. The use of induction machines for both generator and motor could provide a very robust conversion from wind-to-electrical-to-mechanical power. Induction machines are well understood, rugged, and inexpensive. Isolated, self-excited induction generator applications, however, have lagged due to a perceived difficulty of control. Recent approaches to induction machine control have yielded two-fold advantages: assured generation of electrical power and precise generator and motor control. This project will produce an optimized controller with very high reliability and availability with the capability of pumping the maximum volume of water at any wind speed. In Phase I, the design of the generator and motor controller will be performed, and a proof-of-concept breadboard demonstration unit will be designed, fabricated, and tested. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The ability to pump water utilizing wind power will make land use economical in locations where electric service is presently unavailable. This will be true for a remote village or isolated grid system. Remote power supply is a rapidly growing application of power electronics. Rural locations within the United States and in developing countries need this type of capability. Although optimized for water pumping applications, other uses of the electrical energy (such as water processing and purification) are likely._
