Research abstract

The next generation of physics experiments will require accelerators that can produce and accelerate beams of unprecedented quality. However, increasing the overall phase space density of the beam to meet the beam requirements is becoming more difficult, due to fundamental physics limitations of space charge compensation and photocathode optical properties. Time-of-flight and beam xy-tilt measurements are necessary for accelerators that require high quality beams. This project will develop a unique beam diagnostic that can achieve these measurements. Phase I will involve the design, construction, and testing of a cavity-based beam position monitor and a quadrupole cavity for time-of-flight measurements and beam xy-tilt diagnostics. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The diagnostic should find use in existing and future accelerators, including PAL, LCLS, XFEL, and ILC. The high-precision, non-interceptive diagnostics should reduce beam tune-up time and allow pulse-to-pulse measurements to enhance beam luminosity. Any accelerators that require precision measurement, including medical accelerators, should benefit from these diagnostics.
