Research abstract

ICON proposes to optimize its crane-mounted 3D construction-scale printer concept for military applications which will provide breakthrough capability for the construction of Resilient Basing infrastructure worldwide. During Phase I, ICON will conduct a mobility, operations, and capability review to determine the system configuration, concept of operations, and design parameters that are required to meet Air Force requirements. This will include systematic stakeholder discovery interviews to gather Air Force requirements for expeditionary construction, equipment mobility, and system durability and maintenance. After collecting these requirements, ICON will perform a feasibility study to determine how the technology should be tailored to meet the specific technical and operational needs of the Air Force. Based on these findings, ICON will create a technology development plan for SBIR Phase II, focused on developing the downselected printing system configuration and performing a CONUS demonstration, potentially during Exercise Northern Edge.
