Research abstract

AMMONIA (NH3) WILL BE USED INCREASINGLY IN FLUE GAS NOX ABATEMENT PROCESSES; NH3 IS THE SOURCE OF NOX IN COAL GASIFIER/HEAT ENGINE PROCESSES. NO SENSITIVE, ACCURATE NH3 MONITOR IS COMMERCIALLY AVAILABLE FOR REAL-TIME CONTROL OF THESE PROCESSES. THIS PROJECT WILL DEVELOP A REAL-TIME, NON-INTRUSIVE NH3 MONITOR FOR ON-LINE PROCESS CONTROL. THE INSTRUMENT WILL BE BASED ON MEASUREMENT OF NEAR ULTRAVIOLET OR VISIBLE FLUORESCENCE FROM NH OR NH2 EXCITED BY INTENSE ULTRAVIOLET PULSES. THIS INSTRUMENT IS EXPECTED TO PROVIDE A LINEAR MEASUREMENT OF NH3 DOWN TO THE 1 PPM LEVEL. USE OFAN INTENSE, SHORT PULSE FLASHLAMP SOURCE WILL MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO DEVELOP A RELIABLE AND AFFORDABLE INSTRUMENT.
