Research abstract

Larger drones with a distinct radar cross-section are easy, slow-moving targets for air defense interceptors. However, the continual use of these systems can be prohibitively costly, as a single drone could cost from $500K to $1M+ to detect and intercept, depending on the air defense platform. These systems are not ideal for small UAS detection. Commercially available c-UAS detection platforms require enduring network connections for the cloud-based processing of sensor data, which limits the environments where sensors can be deployed and the timeliness of threat detection. Adversarial drone operators currently utilize Electronic Intelligence (ELINT) sensors to determine if active cUAS detection is taking place. These systems have jamming capabilities rendering active detection methods useless.?  challenges to military assets. These compact and agile devices can be used for surveillance, the delivery of payloads, or even as weapons bypassing traditional security measures such as fences and guards. Their relatively low cost, high availability of parts, and ease of operation enable state and non-state actors to utilize them, increasing the risk of espionage, sabotage, and targeted attacks.
