Research abstract

EpiBone is the first and only biotechnology company to gain FDA approval for human trials of a patient’s own stem cell-based tissue. EpiBone’s technology can reduce the wait time for tissue procurement by up to 4 months, and can reduce the time to full recovery by 10 months. Epibone’s platform uses stem cells to create osteochondral grafts (a combination of cartilage on top of bone) and injectable cartilage filler to treat diseased and defective cartilage offering solutions to the many challenges and limitations in the field of joint replacement and cartilage engineering.  EpiBone provides long lasting repairs where its success rate is 10% better than its competitors. Post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) causes stiffness and pain in joints after an injury. Military service members are 5x more likely to be diagnosed with PTOA than the general population and are exposed to more severe trauma leading to chronic issues. Because airmen are diagnosed with PTOA in their 20s and early 30s, it significantly impacts their ability to work and overall quality of life. PTOA accounted for nearly 95% of medical discharges among Iraq and Afghanistan veterans injured in combat.
