Research abstract

The Integrated Object Detection System represents a cutting-edge solution designed to improve safety in terminal airspace by identifying and tracking both avian species (birds) and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs/drones). This system’s primary objective is to mitigate the risk of bird strikes and UAV collisions that can threaten aircraft during critical phases of flight—specifically, during approach and departure in both national airspace and specialized operations at austere airfields. The system leverages Thrust AI’s Hybrid AI-Driven Radar and Optical Sensor Platform, a multi-spectral sensor suite that continuously monitors airspace, detecting and tracking objects in real-time. Harpo’s hybrid approach, which integrates radar, electro-optical infrared (EOIR) sensors, computer vision (CV), and advanced data processing, allows for precise detection and classification of birds and drones, regardless of weather conditions or visibility challenges. Key Capabilities: 1. Avian Detection for Bird Strike Prevention:• Birds are a significant threat to aircraft, especially in low-altitude airspace during takeoff and landing. The system’s radar and optical sensors provide comprehensive coverage, identifying birds of various sizes and species.• By analyzing flight patterns, speed, and altitude, the system can accurately predict potential conflicts between birds and aircraft, enabling proactive measures to be taken by air traffic control or onboard systems to avoid strikes.2. UAV Detection for Collision Avoidance:• The rise in drone activity presents an increasing risk to aircraft. The system can detect and track multiple drones within the approach and departure corridors, ensuring that unauthorized UAVs or those operating near airports are identified promptly.• This capability is essential for securing both commercial aviation operations and specialized airfields where UAV traffic may be prevalent. Real-Time Situational Awareness: By integrating data from radar, EOIR sensors, and advanced AI-driven processing, the Integrated Object Detection System offers air traffic controllers and pilots real-time situational awareness in terminal airspace. The system continuously tracks birds and drones, providing detailed information on their location, velocity, and trajectory. This data enhances airspace management by allowing for quick decisions to avoid potential collisions, thereby improving overall safety and efficiency. National Airspace and Austere Airfield Applications: While particularly valuable for austere airfields that operate under challenging environmental conditions or limited visibility, the system is equally applicable in the national airspace system, where it can augment existing radar and monitoring systems. Its ability to detect both natural (birds) and man-made (UAVs) objects provides comprehensive coverage, making it ideal for use in commercial, civil, and military aviation.
