Research abstract

We propose to design, develop, and demonstrate a concept prototype for an On-Line Intelligent Processor for Situation Assessment (OLIPSA), to serve as a central processor generation military cockpit. The approach integrates several enabling technologies to perform the three essential functions of real-time SA: Event detection will use a Fuzzy Logic processor and an event rulebase to transform fused sensor data into situationally-relevant semantic variables. Current situation assessment will use a Bayesian Belief Network and a tactical network model to combine detected events into a holistic "picture" of the current situation into the future, to support experience-based outcome prediction. The concept prototype will be developed in CASYS, an object-oriented system development environment that generates highly portable Ada code. Our Phase I study will focus on development and demonstration of the concept, and will: 1) define the scope of the demonstration and the tactical knowledge base; 2) design and develop the OLIPSA prototype; 3) demonstrate and evaluate performance; and 4) transition the OLIPSA prototype to the commercial arena.
