Research abstract

Development and simulation is proposed of a control system for multi-input, multi-output nonlinear dynamic power systems. The overall goal will be development of a reliable and survivable power system with optimized steady-state operation, stable and controlled transition between states as a result of a deliberate perturbation, and rapid restoration of electric power after a precipitate perturbation. The method of approach will be a nonlinear composite system analysis. Specific techniques to be used include state space and bond graph techniques, in addition to traditional time domain, s-plane and frequency response techniques. A control system simulation for a transient, nonlinear, highly coupled electrical system network will result. Foster-Miller has developed and implemented a somewhat similar (but much smaller scale) control system to that needed for naval shipboard applications. It consists of a hierarchical, multi-master distributed control system. Phase I will improve the component model fidelity while simultaneously developing the analytical tools needed to analyze the hierarchical control system. A computer simulation will be developed to demonstrate nonlinear dynamic control of the interconnected components. An Option is proposed to continue the analysis of the baseline program and to determine power system control methodology, algorithms, and architecture for a network with changing topologies.
