Research abstract

Foster-Miller is proposing a novel NDE approach, Time Reversal Mirror (TRM) technology, for the detection of marcelling in thick fiber-reinforced composite structures. TRM is an ultrasonic inspection phased-array technique that will inspect composite structural components for anomalies faster, deeper, and with more sensitivity than competing technologies. TRM is valuable in areas where existing complex component geometry or complex microstructure make conventional inspections difficult or impossible. TRM utilizes existing phased-array hardware, and while TRM principles have been known for years, only recently has the declining cost and availability of intensive computation made it practical. The Phase I team will consist of Foster-Miller, Bell Helicopter-Textron and R/D Tech. R/D Tech is the holder of development rights for TRM and has developed other NDT instrumentation for commercial use.
