Research abstract

50385-98-I Surface Tailored Nanophase Alumina Coatings for Oxidation Protection of Aluminide Intermetallics--TDA Research, Inc., 12345 West 52nd Avenue, Wheat Ridge, CO 80033-1916; (303) 940-2300 Dr. D. Brent MacQueen, Principal Investigator Mr. John D. Wright, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG03-98ER82693 Amount: $75,000 The development of structural materials that can be used at high temperatures (1000-1300¿C) in an oxidative environment is crucial to the success of DOE¿s long-standing mission of increasing the efficiency of electric power generation. Aluminides have the potential as high temperature structural materials; however, increased oxidation protection is required for their use at these elevated temperatures. This project will develop an adherent nanophase surface tailored alumina coating that will provide oxidation resistance to aluminides at temperatures up to 1300¿C in an oxidative environment. Phase I will investigate the effectiveness of this nanophase surface tailored alumina coating in preventing oxidative corrosion of nickel and iron aluminides at temperatures to 1300¿C. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The availability of high temperature structural materials would be an immediate benefit to land-based power generation and to advanced aircraft turbines, making higher efficiencies and lower fuel consumption possible._
