Research abstract

This project seeks to develop a novel process to convert waste graphite particles into high-quality coated spherical purified graphite (CSPG), addressing the Department of Defense’s need for a domestic supply of battery-grade graphite. The proposed work leverages spray drying and particle agglomeration techniques to create a cost-effective solution for improving domestic production capacity. This innovation will reduce reliance on foreign sources and provide a scalable approach to meet defense electrification goals. Objectives and Approach:The primary objectives include validating the technical feasibility of converting low-value graphite fines into battery-grade material, optimizing production processes, and evaluating performance in defense-related applications. These milestones will directly address operational gaps in energy storage and supply chain security.DoD Benefits:This effort supports the DoD’s goal of improving energy efficiency and ensuring national security by enabling the domestic production of key battery materials. The technology will contribute to enhanced battery performance, reduced costs, and improved readiness across multiple defense applications.Expertise and Team Strength:Led by Darren Hau, a seasoned expert in energy technologies, the team includes renowned carbon material scientists and industry partners with extensive experience in particle processing and commercialization.
