Research abstract

This project seeks to develop a novel methane pyrolysis process to produce high-quality graphite nanoparticles, addressing the Department of Defense’s (DoD) need for domestically-sourced advanced materials. The proposed work will leverage a unique reactor design that eliminates the need for external heating, significantly reducing production costs while improving material performance. The technical merit lies in combining innovative pyrolysis techniques with optimized catalyst usage, providing breakthrough efficiency in graphite nanoparticle production. Objectives and Approach:The primary objectives include characterizing the graphite nanoparticles, validating their use in key defense applications (e.g., heat shielding and EMI protection), and optimizing the production process. These milestones represent a clear progression towards solving supply chain challenges and creating materials that exceed current DoD performance standards.DoD Benefits:This effort supports the DoD by enhancing the domestic production of critical materials, reducing reliance on foreign sources, and improving supply chain resilience. It contributes to operational readiness by advancing materials for defense aerospace and other high-performance applications.Expertise and Team Strength:Led by Darren Hau, a proven expert in energy technologies, the team includes leading researchers in carbon material synthesis. Their deep expertise ensures the capability to meet the ambitious technical objectives, reinforced by prior successful R&D and commercialization efforts.
