Research abstract

A NEED EXISTS FOR A ROBUST HIGH-EMITTANCE COATING WHICH CAN BE APPLIED ON WINDTUNNEL MODELS TO ENABLE MEASUREMENT OF THEIR SUFACE TEMPERATURES. BASED ON OVER 30 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE WITH CARBON-BLACK-LOADED POLYMERS, INFRARED-ABSORBING AGRICULTURAL PLASTICS, PARTICLE DISPERSION CONTROL AND MODIFICATION, AND THE CONTROL OF SURFACE GLOSS INPAINT FORMULATIONS, SCIENTISTS AT THE MATERIALS TECHNOLOGIES CORPORATION HAVE REASON TO BELIEVE THAT THE FORMULATION OF THE DESIRED COATING MATERIAL AND THE METHOD OF ITS APPLICATION IS ENTIRELY FEASIBLE ASAPPARENT FROM THE FIRST PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICAL OPTICS. OUR NOVEL COATING MATERIAL WILL REPRESENT A SIGNIFICANT ADVANCE OVER THE CURRENTLY-AVAILABLE INFRARED OPTICAL BLACKS. THE PROPOSED COATING WILL BE APPLIED TO THE WIND TUNNEL MODELS AS A SPRAY. THE COATING MATERIAL WILL BE LOW GLOSS; AND HIGH THERRNAL CONDUCTIVITY, TO AID IN ITS STABILITY ARID UTILITY AS A BLACK EMITTER. ITS PHYSICAL PROPERTIES WILL ENABLE IT TO ADHERE WELL TO STAINLESS STEEL, ALUMINUM AND OTHER METAL SUBSTRATES.
