Research abstract

General packaging of military parts and equipment for storage and shipment use barrier materials which are water-vapor proof, grease-proof, puncture resistant, flexible and sealable. Currently used packaging systems, however, employ non-recyclable multiple barrier laminates requiring electrically activated heat seals, making them inappropriate for field use. Foster-Miller proposes to utilize our in-depth experience in bag closure systems, highly water-vapor-resistant barrier films and plastics recycling to provide the military and commercial sectors with a new parts storage/shipment bagging system. Our proposed approach for a complete packaging system will eliminate heal sealing by using novel and highly impermeable packaging materials such as Liquid Crystal Polymer films, adhesive or mechanical seals, and reusable designs and/or recyclable materials such as biodegradable polymers. Our well-defined study will identify and test alternate materials and methods of producing acceptable packaging systems that meet the technical requirements of MIL-B-131, are operator friendly, are recyclable and/or reusable, and eliminate the need for electricity in the sealing process. The development team includes experts in mechanical closure technology (Dow Brands), PSA technology (Kendall) and re-useable barrier film technology (Foster-Miller).
