Research abstract

Conventional imaging spectrometers acquire data within a four dimensional continuum (x,y,l,t) in several ways, all of which involve some form of scanning--mirrors must be moved or different filters must be dialed in. We are proposing to compare the relative costs and benefits of three different approaches to obtaining multispectral imaging data. The three proposed approaches represent a broad cross section of performance and cost relative to the four dimensional multispectral imaging problem. The three approaches include (1) multiple focal planes with fixed filters, (2) a single focal plane with switched filters, and (3) a single focal plane with 2 D holographic gratings based on a highly innovative imaging spectrometer concept recently demonstrated at the University of Arizona that is non-scanning and contains no moving parts. The three design approaches include dewar designs that encompass optical, thermal, mechanical and electrical design details based on existing IR focal planes. This Phase I SBIR comparative design will conclude with a recommendation for the best approach to be pursued in Phases II and III.
