Research abstract

Alpine Advanced Materials is spearheading innovation in the aerospace and defense sectors with HX5, our proprietary carbon fiber reinforced polymer system. Developed with the expertise of Lockheed Martin Skunk Works, HX5 is engineered to supplant traditional metallic and aluminum-based parts, providing a high-strength, lightweight alternative that propels performance and efficiency forward. Our Phase I proposal is focused on validating the application of HX5 in the replacement of conventional components, aiming to achieve energy optimization and enhanced performance across a spectrum of aerospace and defense applications. This effort is underpinned by a strong domestic supply chain and is set to be augmented by advanced digital engineering methodologies, including detailed modeling, simulation, and finite element analysis, to ensure the highest levels of precision and reliability in our transformative material solutions.HX5, Alpine Advanced Materials’ flagship product, is engineered to thrive in the most demanding aerospace environments. Its lightweight, corrosion-resistant nature, coupled with superior quality and mechanical properties, makes it an ideal replacement for traditional materials. HX5’s thermal stability and environmental performance exceed that of conventional alternatives. The primary production method of injection molding for HX5 is not only agile and cost-effective but also significantly reduces production timelines when compared to the machining of aluminum or steel parts. This innovative material and its manufacturing process represent a leap forward in aerospace material science, offering a blend of durability, quality, and efficiency that is unmatched in the industry. Alpine is currently overmolding carbon fiber thermoplastic panels and will be using those baseline processes to evaluate a dry overmold. The objective of this Phase I initiative is to conduct a study and testing focused on the replacement of general metallic and aluminum-based parts in aerospace and defense applications with Alpine’s proposed solution. This comprehensive report will explore the ablative properties of HX5 in an as-molded condition and coupled with a dry-fiber carbon weave overmold. Alpine’s customer in this effort, Northrop Grumman, is looking to develop a lightweight, scalable, ablative nozzle for commercial and defense rocket applications. The as-molded option will be tested to identify baseline ablative capabilities, and the overmolded option will be tested to identify the improvements of having a formed carbon layer as the primary ablative surface. This effort will also establish the overmolding and impregnation of HX5 into a dry carbon weave medium.
