Research abstract

In this SBIR program, Foster-Miller, teaming with renowned university and industry partners will develop a novel optoelectronic modulator for displays. our approach combines unique properties of strained semiconductor films and bandgap engineering techniques to provide optical modulators capable with modulation depths in excess of 5000:1 at speeds near I GHz. These high performance figures are unachievable with present technology and presents for the first time, a significant advance in meeting both Navy and commercial needs. The proposed technology has significant Navy applications in displays and optical communications and computing. Phase I efforts will focus on demonstrating prototype 64 x 64 element optical modulators capable of 100 MHz at wavelengths in the 800 to 850 nm range. In Phase II, our demonstrations will be scaled up for a large format 1024 x 1024 pixel design and high speeds (I GHz), compatible with Navy requirements for free-space communications.
