Research abstract

New and innovative holography cinematography techniques described in this proposal will meet the challenging quantitative spatial and temporal requirements of the solicitation over the designated volume and time span. PSI proposes the use of repetitively pulsed holography/holographic interferometry to capture highly spatially and temporally resolved true 3D images utilizing an innovative optical system. This optical system coupled to an existing framing camera and repetitively pulsed laser being made by PSI will form the holographic cinematography system. Since many high framing rate temporally spaced holograms will be taken, images will be obtained over a protracted period of time. Key proof of concept holographic experiments of spall fragment fields and backsurface deformations will be performed in Phase I quantitatively demonstrating the design concept. The Phase II system that will be designed in this Phase I effort, via numerical analysis of the 3D holographic images, will provide quantitative data characterizing the spall fragment field, i.e. particle size and velocity vector distributions as well as backsurface deformations, meeting the requirements of the solicitation. The analysis efforts and successful proof of concept experiemtns performed in Phase I will minimize the technical risk associated with the planned Phase II program.
