Research abstract

Tungsten is one of the most important candidate materials for the diverter components of fusion energy systems, due to its low erosion and good properties at high temperature. However, the fabrication of complex-shaped tungsten parts by conventional processing techniques is problematic. This project will develop a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique for producing some fusion reactor components made of tungsten. The CVD technique will be used to produce tungsten alloys that will meet the primary requirements of low sputtering, high strength, and toughness. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The practical application of fusion for efficient electricity generation requires the development of materials and structures that can withstand the demanding reactor environment. The proposed tungsten alloys would be key materials for reactors that will ultimately be scaled up for commercial use.
