Research abstract

The firm proposes to investigate two innovative concepts for active vibration control (AVC). These concepts are aimed at reducing HCF vibrations and stresses. HCF vibrations must be minimized during engine operations, because they not only severely limit the operating life of fan and compressor blades, but can also cause catastrophic engine failure. To minimize these vibrations, the development of experimentally verified computational procedures for predicting these vibrations, together with the development of vibration control systems, are key technologies that can reduce the cost and time associated with the development of any large or small engine. The primary objectives of the proposed Phase I program are to conduct a feasibility study of the two AVC concepts, and to obtain a better understanding of the physics of HCF and aerodynamic drivers for blade vibrations.
