Research abstract

Physical Sciences Inc. and Los Alamos National Laboratory propose to develop a high-performance propellant for next generation controllable solid propulsion systems. This propellant will be developed with the intent of providing a high-pressure exponentin addition to high density-specific impulse. The propellant will enable long duration firings, maximum system efficiency, and precision energy management, all while maintaining a less sensitive hazard class of 1.3. The propellant will use novel, high energy and impulse ballistic modifying materials to achieve these goals. The propellant formulation will also be tailorable to meet various systems requirements, such as maximum flame temperature and mechanical strength. The innovative chemistry, combined with specific changes in the propellant formulations, will enable ingredient compatibility, limit excessive flame temperature and shock sensitivity. Phase I will focus on the development of the propellant formulation, ensuring safe handling and scaleup, and verifying burning rates meet objectives while working with technology transition partner(s). Phase II will focus on formulation refinement, scale-up, and quantification of propellant properties to enable incorporation into future system designs.
