Research abstract

The growing threat of GPS signal disruption/corruption due to jamming, spoofing, and environmental factors poses a significant challenge for the Department of Defense (DoD). They rely on accurate and reliable positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) information to ensure mission success. In response, Spectral Energies, LLC (SE) and its partners are collaborating to develop a seamless integrated multi-source approach for assured and resilient alternative PNT. This approach will provide ranging and relative time synchronization to military systems in contested environments by integrating Signal of Opportunity (SOP) from multi-constellation Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite signals and an emerging assured PNT signals from non-GPS satellite networks. In Phase I, the team will develop approaches to use non-GPS satellites for PNT. The team will also evaluate the timing performance of a proof-of-concept FPGA chipset fusing. In Phase II, the team will develop the proof-of-concept into a prototype system that will be field tested. When completed, this approach will enhance the Departments of the Air Force’s (DAF’s) and the Space Force’s capability to maintain accurate PNT information in contested environments, ultimately supporting multi-domain missions and space security.
