Research abstract

A state of the art computational fluid dynamic methodology is proposed for first-principles-based simulation of detonation in FAE clouds. The approach is based on extensions of well proved and established technology currently in routine use for multiphase, chemically reacting and turbulent solid rocket motor exhaust plume analyses. Latest advances in the modeling of multiphase phenomena from the field of transient, solid propellant interior ballistics are also brought to bear upon the FAE problem. Recent developments in large eddy simulation (LES) of turbulence from the field of high speed jets and transient liquid propellant gun interior ballistics provide a physically realistic approach for representing large scale turbulent structures in FAE clouds. The overall FAE modeling framework is constructed around a well proven, unsteady, three-dimensional, finite-volume, CFD code called CRAFT. CRAFT utilizes a fully implicit, upwind scheme with higher order spatial and temporal accuracy to provide for robust shock capturing without spurious oscillations and good resolution of other embedded discontinuities (e.g. flame fronts, limiting particle streamlines, etc.). The overall modeling framework provides a unique capability for a variety of transient, particulate-laden, combusting flowfields.
