Research abstract

The Air Force seeks a camera system designed for law enforcement and military use to provide real-time video situational awareness enhancement. The camera should be a small, handheld, portable, battery-powered device that can be thrown into areas that the user desires visibility, but would be physically dangerous to venture. Real-time video will be wirelessly streamed to the user as well as a Defense Operation Center. As an example, the camera can be thrown into a nearby room to allow the user to rapidly get a complete view of the room. The randomized placement of the camera and potential people/objects/areas of interest necessitates complete 360 degree coverage area. The need for day, night, and unlit indoor operation necessitates the use of thermal cameras. Toyon proposes to utilize its expertise in camera array systems, thermal infrared imagers, ruggedized military devices, artificial intelligence and neural networks, as well as smartphone software to develop the proposed system. The 360 degree thermal camera system will enable more favorable outcomes and increased user safety.
