Research abstract

High-field magnets, used in particle accelerators for high energy physics research, require insulation materials that can be processed at elevated temperatures (600 to 900 C) and withstand exposure to high levels of radiation during operation. This project will develop and demonstrate a ceramic-based insulation system that can be directly applied to superconducting wires prior to heat treatment. The new insulation will be designed for use in wind-and-react processes, in which the superconductor and insulation are co-processed at temperatures on the order of 600 to 900C. Phase I will address the formulation and processing of ceramic-based electrical insulation materials for use with A-15, HTS, and MgB2 superconducting wires. An irradiation experiment will be designed to validate the low radiation-induced outgassing characteristics of the insulation. The irradiation experiment will be conducted in Phase II. Commercial Applications And Other Benefits as described by the Applicant: In addition to supporting the nation's High Energy Physics program, these ceramic insulation systems should find use in the production of superconducting motors, generators, transformers, and MRI magnets. Other possible application includes energy and aerospace systems that use ceramic matrix composites at elevated temperatures.
