Research abstract

When lithium-ion cells are exposed to high temperatures, overcharge, over discharge, or short circuits, the extreme conditions not only could cause cell failure but also could lead to fires or even explosions. Such possibilities have led to serious concerns about the use of this type of battery in the development of electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid EVs (HEVs), and plug-in HEVs (PHEVs). Therefore, it is critical to develop new materials for improving the safety and usability of large-format lithium-ion batteries. This project will develop new flame retardant additives for Li-ion battery electrolytes. These additives will be used in small quantities and will be designed to not adversely affect battery operation while completely suppressing flammability. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: Li batteries are considered to be promising candidates for electric vehicles and portable electronic equipment. The successful development of safe and high energy density Li rechargeable batteries for HEV and PHEV should advance the worldwide effort to reduce the production of greenhouse gases.
