Research abstract

78238S Many modern computer simulations, such as those used in high energy physics research, have increasingly more realistic physics features (e.g., three-dimensionality); however, they are often more difficult to execute especially when run in parallel on a high-performance computer. This project will develop a framework for remote setup, control, and monitoring that will provide users with a graphical interface to configure, start and stop codes within scheduler systems, and receive reduced data to check the code progress. It will provide utilities to build client applications with a rich set of graphical controls, including 3-dimensional imagery of the simulation domain, that pre-process input files and post-process output files. Phase I will build a working prototype system that models beam properties of high energy experiments accelerators, demonstrating proof-of-principal for the framework. The prototype will be capable of automatically generating input files, launch a parallel run, and visualize data from the run. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: The proposed framework should bring add-on value to any simulation code, especially those that run remotely on high-performance resources. For example, groups that have codes that model combustion, biophysics, or climatology would be candidates for the early adoption of the technology.
