Research abstract

Inorganic scintillation crystals are a very important element of the detection systems for current and next generation experiments in nuclear and particle physics. However, the performance of these detection systems is often limited by the properties of scintillators now available for neutron and gamma ray detection. This project will investigate a new scintillator material that provides excellent light yield for neutrons and also provides pulse shape discrimination between neutron and gamma events. The new scintillator also provides very good performance for gamma ray detection, including high light output and a very fast initial decay component. Phase I will demonstrate the feasibility of producing the new scintillator for neutron and gamma detection. An extensive characterization of the scintillator also is planned. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The proposed detector technology should be very promising for nuclear and particle physics experiments. It also should be applicable in medical imaging systems, astronomy, diffraction, nondestructive studies, nuclear non-proliferation, and bore hole logging.
