Research abstract

72505S03-I Integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) coal combustion has the potential for significantly improving the efficiency of converting coal power and for reducing emissions. However, corrosion in the syngas environment limits the lifetime of IGCC components and increases cost. This project will develop low-cost, dip-coated ceramic coatings to prevent the high temperature corrosion of super alloys used in turbine engines that operate in syngas environments. Phase I will identify innovative ceramic coating materials derived from chemically stable ceramic oxides and determine, in a high temperature environment, their stability in syngas, thermal expansion, adhesion, and compatibility with alloy turbine materials. Then, the adhesion of tailored environmental barrier coatings, derived from ceramic oxides, will be evaluated for use with alloy or ceramic-based, turbine hot-section components Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by awardee: The coatings developed in this work should be applicable to turbine components and process equipment exposed to high temperature syngas environments. The coatings also may be suitable for other applications requiring high-temperature corrosion resistance for super alloys (e.g. Kraft recovery boilers). The advantages of these coatings include low cost fabrication and enhanced corrosion resistance.
