Research abstract

To address the Navy’s need for a high-energy transient voltage suppressor (TVS) for its F/A-18E/F and EA-18G aircraft, Intellisense Systems, Inc. (Intellisense) proposes to develop the new Adaptive Transient Voltage Suppression (AVIAN) device based on a new design that utilizes readily available, mature components. Specifically, the innovation in thermal management and electronic control will enable AVIAN to suppress very high-energy, 350 A, 50 ms generator startup surges on the three-phase, 400 Hz power bus as well as all shorter transients that may occur during flight to ensure that no voltages will ever exceed 150 V. As a result, this device will meet Navy specifications as well as the overall goal of protecting equipment on the AC power bus from damage caused by transient overvoltage conditions. The device is also programmable to operate at higher or lower clamping voltages, is internally protected against damage, implements built-in test capabilities, and is compatible with both AC and DC operation. In Phase I, Intellisense will perform a study to design a TVS that meets F/A-18E/F and EA-18G capabilities, handling 2625 J surges up to 350 A at 150 V for up to 50 ms per MIL-STD-704E standards, and will build and test a prototype to demonstrate the effectiveness of the design. In Phase II, Intellisense plans to further mature the prototype and extend testing to demonstrate additional performance characteristics, including temperature range and reverse leakage current.
