Research abstract

72625S03-I Space charge (the self-consistent interactions between particles in a beam) is suspected of adversely affecting many high-energy accelerators. However, computer codes to model circular accelerators do not presently include space charge effects. This project will implement a state-of-the-art space charge model from the beam physics community into simulation codes for circular accelerators. In Phase I, the necessary space charge subroutines will be wrapped for use in a specific circular accelerator simulation code, user-friendly interfaces and diagnostics will be added, and the improved code will be used to model a well-known circular accelerator. Commercial Application and Other Benefits as described by awardee: The physics modeling capability should be in demand in the high-energy accelerator community. Researchers familiar with these subroutines could provide services as consultants. Also, the easy-to-use interface could itself become a commercial product.
