Research abstract

As adversaries’ capabilities and missile technologies advance and improve, so must our technology to outpace the emerging threat. Exo-atmospheric threats create significant challenges for current interceptor technologies, leading to far more challenging requirements than those placed on previous interceptors. The environments present in Low Earth Orbit (LOE), where these interceptors operate, can present many challenges from Natural Space Environments (NSE), requiring engineered solutions. Missile Defense interceptors must be capable of operating in the NSE in order to meet mission requirements. Metamaterials offer a solution to meet operational requirements while maintaining structural, thermal and NSE integrity. Approved for Public Release | 25-MDA-12052 (27 Mar 25)
