HIPPOS: Heterogenous Integrated Photonics Platform for Optical Switches

The proposed effort seeks to develop technology for fast, compact fiber optic switches with low optical losses with operability spanning the visible through near infrared region of the spectrum. Phase I of the activity represents a design and materials study to assess feasibility of the heterogeneous integrated photonics platform architecture and will create initial design specifications and fabrication methodologies. If selected in a potential Phase II endeavor, the project would lead to packaged switch prototypes to enable high-speed switching for quantum and atomic sensors and systems of interest to the Navy and other DoD components.
