Research abstract

The proposed effort seeks to address the fabrication and performance requirements of high-speed integrated optical modulators required by future Air Force systems. Our approach replaces traditional fiber-based discrete assemblies with heterogeneous photonic components based on a new class of photonic integrated circuits. Phase I includes a component design study to evaluate feasibility of the approach, creates initial component specifications, and develops a foundry-compatible fabrication flow for future manufacturing. We outline a heterogeneous photonics platform that integrates ultra-low-loss waveguides and electro-optic modulators that is compatible with operation over a broad optical bandwidth. If selected for Phase II, the project will create prototypes the enable extensible capabilities for a variety of industry and defense applications.
