Research abstract

Our proposal aims to develop a GigE-Vision-compliant event-based camera (EBC) system that leverages commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components to address the critical need for standardization in capturing and processing dynamic scenes. Event-based cameras operate fundamentally differently from traditional frame-based cameras by detecting changes in the scene asynchronously, closely mimicking biological vision systems such as the human eye. This technology offers significant advantages in terms of high temporal resolution and reduced data redundancy, making it ideal for applications in autonomous vehicles, robotics, surveillance, and defense. Despite these advantages, the lack of standardized interfaces for EBCs has hindered their broader adoption and integration into existing systems. Our proposed solution involves developing both the hardware and software interfaces necessary to ensure compatibility with existing machine vision standards, specifically GigE-Vision and GenICam/GenTL. The project will utilize 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GigE) technology to facilitate high-speed data transmission and configuration of the EBC. The hardware design will include a small form factor and an intermediary FPGA, similar to the specifications of an AMD Kintex-7, to handle data processing and interface with the 10GigE system. Additionally, the system will feature integrated digital-to-analog converters (DACs) for sensor component biases and an external GPIO interface for synchronization and timing. The software interface will be designed to comply with the Motion Imagery Standards Board (MISB) requirements and ensure low latency operation. Phase I of the project will focus on developing concepts and schematics for the electrical and mechanical components, as well as a block diagram of the software package. Feasibility will be demonstrated through material testing and analytical modeling. Phase II will involve developing and evaluating a prototype to ensure it meets the performance goals and Navy requirements, including cybersecurity and system security planning. The ultimate goal is to transition this technology to practical use in government facilities, with potential applications in manufacturing and other industrial settings within the Department of Defense. By standardizing the interface and utilizing COTS components, this project will unlock the full potential of EBC technology, facilitating its adoption and integration, and ultimately enhancing the capabilities of the warfighter and other defense applications. This effort aligns with the modernization priorities in microelectronics, space technology, and trusted AI and autonomy, and promises to significantly advance the field of machine vision and automated data processing. As part of our commitment to advancing this technology, we will engage with industry stakeholders and end-users throughout the development process to ensure that the final product meets the practical needs and expectations of the market.
