Research abstract

Makai will develop a low power, low-cost system with integrated sensors and microprocessor to estimate surface wave directional spectra.  Makai will work with the University of Hawaii for rapid system integration and testing of an initial prototype within Phase I. Detailed hydrodynamic simulations will be combined with spectral analysis to develop the necessary RAOs, transfer functions, and fourier coefficients to compute the directional wave height spectra from sensor time series data. Power estimates show capabilities to perform measurements multiple times per day for long, months long, mission durations. The small form factor, with standalone battery and microprocessors, is anticipated to provide a solution which can be readily integrated into both the scientific and NAVO glider systems.
