Research abstract

Foster-Miller proposes an innovative approach to increase the frequency coverage of high temperature superconducting (HTS) antennas in the VHF/VHF frequency bands. We will concentrate on small antennas for missile seekers where the available antenna aperture is severely limited as compared to operating wavelengths. By using a superconducting delay line to achieve multi-mode response and a unique non-linear circuit, this novel antenna approach will break the conditions that limit the bandwidth of small antennas and achieve broadband performance. In this Phase I, we will extend the existing theory sufficiently to determine feasibility of the proposed approach and then perform a proof-of-concept demonstration. Foster-Miller will work with the DuPont Superconducting Group with whom we have a long history of innovative technological development.
