Research abstract

Recent conflicts have seen the confrontation of the United States and its allies with a new type of enemy; an enemy relying not only upon traditional means of aggression, but also upon terror. The effects of this new order of attacking American freedomshave been realized by civilians and servicemen alike. While many measures have been taken to heighten securities in American cities, there is a dire need to provide additional layers of defense on the battlefield. In this Phase I program, Foster-Millerproposes to aid in the defense of American servicemen from the untraditional munitions currently under suspicion of use by so-called rogue nations. The proposed effort will entail the development of an automated individual real-time toxic exposuremonitoring (AIRTEM) system that will provide an immediate assessment of chemically- and biologically-induced impairment of deployed personnel. (P-030135) The development of a fully automated real-time monitor for the detection of chemically and biologically induced impairment of deployed personnel will provide the U.S. Air Force and other divisions of the DoD with an invaluable tool in the defense of thenation. The device will find commercial applications in sale to civilian police, fire and emergency personnel, as well as the American public, in times of uncertainty.
