Research abstract
Hardwireĺs approach utilizes novel lamination and metal processing technologies which result in multi-hardness metallic laminates and plates which exhibit superior properties for armor applications.á Uniquely layered laminates, including combinations of RHA, VHH, UHH, and stainless steels, result in Damascus steel type properties, yielding products that are both exceptionally hard and tough.á The research aims to demonstrate the viability of processing these novel multi-layer laminates via scalable, industrial methods.á The technology utilizes groundbreaking advancements in the production of military ballistic armor with Hardwireĺs solid-state quench (HWSSQ) technology for flat and contoured armor components.á Through precise control of the Hardwire quenching process, flat or complex multi-curve geometries are achieved while maintaining ballistic performance within the laminated metal and without compromising material integrity.á The program will demonstrate improved ballistic performance over traditional monolithic materials.á Ultimately, this program combines the SSQ technology with unique methods for metal lamination and rolling which results in multi-hardness materials that are viable for fabrication into vehicle armor components.á
