Research abstract

Technologies that enable the remote detection, identification, and quantification of trace chemical species in the atmosphere can provide critical information for uncovering activities associated with proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD). Passive detection techniques use infrared and visible sensors to measure the scene radiance, followed by data analysis to separate background and atmospheric signatures from those of the trace chemical species. A major shortcoming in the current development of WMD sensors and their associated analysis algorithms is the lack of generally available and user-friendly radiative transfer (RT) software that can predict WMD signatures under realistic atmospheric and environmental conditions. This project will provide validated atmosphere-embedded, trace-gas signature tools that support the development of optical sensors and exploitation algorithms for the remote monitoring of WMD production. In particular, enhanced versions of the MODTRAN¿5 line-of-sight radiance model and the MCScene 3D synthetic hyperspectral image generator software will be developed. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: The technology should benefit all commercial and Federal Government groups involved in the design and development of optically-based remote sensors for virtually any application, such as surveillance, natural resource monitoring, urban planning, fire detection, and natural disaster damage assessment.
