Research abstract

A survey of High Power Microwave technologies reveals substantial efforts toward microwave technology. Gains in power and efficiency are being made to the point of being deployable. Unfortunately, little effort has been made toward the pulse powerrequired to drive the microwave sources. This proposal details a phase II effort aimed at providing deployable pulsed power sources compact enough to be mounted on an aircraft, while powerful enough to meet HPM needs. A Phase II effort for the CompactPulse Power Sources will concentrate on the development of two types of compact pulse generators, including impulse generators with pulsewidths of less than 20 ns and moderate pulse generators with pulse widths from 50 ns to 150 ns. These generatorsoffer peak voltage levels from 600 kV to 1 MV, with repetition rates from 100 Hz (impulse system) and 30 Hz (moderate pulse system). These generators will be deployable systems at the end of this proposed effort. Each system includes the ultrafastcharging supply. This effort will focus on packaging the very best generator that will fit in the described volume. The generators will be maximized for peak voltage/peak power output as well as for efficiency in energy delivery.
