Research abstract

The development of a safe, efficient, and low-cost hydrogen fuel infrastructure would help stimulate the hydrogen economy. Currently, the DOE has completed an evaluation of the infrastructure and refueling needs for 35 MPa vehicles. However, the refueling station equipment requirements and costs to meet the ¿5 kg in 3 minutes¿ dispensing target have not been addressed. This project will determine the incremental dispenser and fueling station costs of five advanced storage options relative to the baseline 35 MPa compressed hydrogen station. By modeling the energy and mass flows during the dispensing process, the fueling station requirements will be calculated, and equipment configurations and protocols will be generated. Commercial Applications and other Benefits as described by the awardee: Success in this project would contribute to the DOE goals of reducing the nation¿s dependence on imported petroleum and improving the environment through the reduction of fossil fuel-related emissions. The use of hydrogen as a fuel for transportation and stationary power applications has been identified as a path towards the achievement of both of these goals
