Research abstract

3rd Generation FLIR (3GF) systems exhibit sensor response drift that traditionally requires blinding the sensor for correction—a process that can be compromising in high-risk scenarios. In the laboratory settings, we have developed and demonstrated a scene-based non uniformity correction (SBNUC) technique which leverages the Variable Aperture Mechanism (VAM) present in 3GF systems. This innovative approach enables continuous correction for gain and offset drift without interrupting the video from the sensor. Under the Phase II Sequential, we plan to build upon our prior successes by integrating our scene-based pipeline directly into the 3GF hardware. We will demonstrate the functionality of the pipeline on an operational prototype and proceed to design a first article of an SBNUC-equipped Thermal Receiver Unit (TRU). This step will establish the groundwork for scaling up production of units.
