Research abstract

A PULSED DEVICE WILL BE STUDIED WHICH CAN PRODUCE LARGE FLUXES OF OXYGEN ATOMS IN THE 1 TO 5 EV ENERGY RANGE. THE HIGH END OF THIS ENERGY RANGE CORRESPONDS TO VELOCITIES APPROPRIATE TO LOW EARTH SPACE SHUTTLE ORBITS. AS PRESENTLY CONFIGURED THE DEVICE WOULD PROVIDE 10(18) OXYGEN ATOMS PER PULSE AND WOULD BE SCALABLE TO HIGHER LEVELS AND REPETITIVE PULSING. AN EXPERIMENTAL PROOF OF CONCEPT WILL BE PROVIDED IN PHASE I. PRESENCE OF A HIGH FLUX OF OXYGEN ATOMS WILL BE DEMONSTRATED AND THE O-ATOM VELOCITY WILL BE MEASURED. IN PHASE II A REPETITIVELY PULSED TEST FACILITY WILL BE FABRICATED TO BE USED TO STUDY THE EFFECTS OF ENERGETIC ATOMIC OXYGEN ON MATERIALS APPROPRIATE FOR LOW EARTH ORBIT APPLICATIONS.
