Research abstract

The Army SBIR Phase I objective is to wirelessly charge conformal wearable batteries (CWBs) within combat vehicles, such as Infantry Brigade Vehicles, while in use by warfighters.áWireless power transfer can be a means of improving Army missions by increasing CWB reliability, minimizing battery swapping, expanding future capabilities of warfighter electronics, and reducing excess CWB inventory.áThe purpose of this SBIR Phase I effort is toáimplement a wireless charging system that can reliably power CWBs without physical contact while adding minimal weight to the CWB.áThe transmitter will include the ability to operate for extreme misalignment and distance variations of the receiver due to warfighter movement. Furthermore, the receiver in the CWB will include a single light-weight fabric-based receiver coil to add minimal weight and readily meet thin packaging requirements of CWBs.áAt the completion of the Phase I project, the wireless charging system will be capable of operating for extreme changes in posture and positioning of warfighters. Furthermore, the receiver will include a single light-weight receiver module to have minimal impact on CWB weight. This will increase the reliability and operational capabilities of CWBs for warfighters, while dramatically reducing Army CWB inventory costs.
