Research abstract

Not Available Dynamics Technology, Inc. (DTI) proposes to extend the Navy's netcentric warfare capabilities by exploiting existing and emerging sensor systems to support integrated undersea warfare (IUSW) missions. In particular, we address the problem of identifying covert minelayer operations in areas where U.S. warships or commercial shipping targets may be operating. The techniques to be demonstrated could also be extended to other IUSW missions. The Covert Operations Detector (COD) will be based on a self-organizing cluster analysis formulation applied to multi- sensor data. This approach maps observables into attributes associated with normal and threat behaviors. An essential feature of the approach is the ability to adaptively estimate behavior attributes and to accommodate new information and changes in expected behavior based on actual data. Classification of normal and hostile behaviors will be supported by environmental and behavioral models. The COD concept is directly applicable to on-going Navy surveillance information system development program (e.g. Littoral Surveillance System). In Phase I, DTI will develop the underlying computational machinery, select among candidate algorithmic implementations and demonstrate feasibility on sample datasets. In addition, we will identify Phase II development requirments and the transition path to an operational system. The success of the proposed effort will provide an advanced capability for leveraging the information provided
