Research abstract

50363-98-I Micromachined Silicon Sensor for DNA Sequencing by Hybridization--TPL, Inc, 3921 Academy Parkway North, NE, Albuquerque, NM 87109-4416; (505) 342-4414 Dr. Larry J. Kepley, Principal Investigator Dr. William F. Hartman, Business Official DOE Grant No. DE-FG03-98ER82698 Amount: $74,996 Gene probes are certain to play an increasingly important role in health care and monitoring of agriculture products. This project will combine the demonstrated advantages of probe immobilization on porous, flow-through substrates (e.g., porous silicon) with the extreme sensitivity of microelectronic gravimetric devices known as flexural plate-wave (FPW) devices. The sensors will be compatible with fabrication methods for microelectronics operable while in contact with aqueous solutions. The primary objective of the Phase I effort is to design, fabricate, and test the prototype sensors, electronics, and software required to test the feasibility of using porous FPW devices as commercial sensors for genetic information. Commercial Applications and Other Benefits as described by the awardee: This technology could find widespread use in the medical community for the detection of genetic illnesses as well as other applications. _
